Next GoLP VIP Seminar by Patric Muggli

On Thursday, 16th of February at 11:30 am, there will be a GoLP VIP Seminar by Patric Muggli (Max Planck Insitute for Physics, Munich, Germany). The event will take place at Anfiteatro Abreu Faro – Complexo I at IST.

Title: AWAKE: a platform for plasma wakefield acceleration and beam/plasma interaction experiments

Abstract: The main ambition of AWAKE [1] is to develop a plasma wakefield accelerator [2] driven by high-energy proton (p+) bunches available at CERN to produce high-energy electron (e-) bunches with parameters suitable for particle physics applications [3]. The mid-term plan [4] calls for self-modulaSon (SM) of the long and narrow, 400GeV p+ bunch in a first plasma so it can drive wakefields with large amplitude (~1GV/m) in a second, hundreds of meters-long plasma. In that plasma, an externally-injected e- bunch can gain hundreds of GeVs of energy and can be used, for example, for dark photon searches. SM (axisymmetric mode) [5] in the first plasma (that of current experiments) can develop as an instability or be seeded using the relaSvisSc ionization front propagating with the short laser pulse that creates the plasma [6]. The laser pulse ionizes a 10m-long column of rubidium vapor. SM can also be seeded by wakefields driven by a short e- bunch traveling ahead of the p+ bunch [7]. When the two bunches are misaligned, wakefields seed (non-axisymmetric mode) hosing (H) of the long p+ bunch [8]. Seeding makes the development of SM and H, of associated wakefields, and of their effect on the p+ bunch, reproducible from event to event [6,7]. When the p+ bunch is also made wide, the current filamentation instability (CFI) can develop [9]. The various stages of CFI (filamentation, merging, shock) could be observed along the long bunch.

I will introduce AWAKE and its goals, the experimental parameters, and setup. I will show experimental results obtained so far, especially regarding SM, H, and e- acceleration. I will also show hints of CFI occurrence. I will describe plans for the next experiments, in particular those with a discharge plasma source [10] developed in collaboration with IST. The discharge source is a possible candidate for the very long plasma needed for the future of AWAKE.
